Archipelago by photographer Klea McKenna
is a collection of photograms made in the forest at night. The
photograms record a stunning and colorful record of the terrain of each
leaf in incredible detail. McKenna makes the series in response to a
time spent in Hawaii, living ‘off the grid’ with her family in a one
room house during the early 1980’s. She made the works for Archipelago in 2012 and 2013 but has been again referencing Hawaii’s natural world in her more recent works.
The artist explains, "I begin by responding to a particular location, a
landscape that I have a personal relationship to or that has a
compelling history. I want to record an imprint of this place – both
visual and emotional – rather than a picture of it… something that
decodes the way we experience a place or a phenomenon."
Klea McKenna is now based in San Francisco. She is represented by Von Lintel Gallery, and will be showing NO LIGHT UNBROKEN at their location from Sep. 06 to Oct. 18, 2014. She is also the photographer and co-founder for In The Make, an online arts journal of studio visits with West Coast artists.
