TIM MAGUIRE | SmartPlanet: Water Tank Project to rejuvenate New York City skyline

"For three months next spring, New York City’s iconic water tanks will be transformed into canvases for some of the world’s most innovative artists and musicians.

To promote water conservation and increase awareness of the world’s dwindling fresh water supply, not-for-profit group Word Above the Street is working with artists to draw attention to the water tanks in all five boroughs of the city. Dubbed the Water Tank Project, the initiative will reinvent 300 of New York’s tanks in the spring of 2013.

Artists and musicians such as Thom Yorke, Jay-Z, Ed Ruscha and Tim Maguire have already signed on to participate in the project. City residents and school children will also have a chance to partake in the makeover as students are invited to enter their artwork in a competition for a spot on the skyline.

After the three-month long exhibit, the project will move across the globe to Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Mexico City and more. Updates on the initiative can be found on the Water Tank Project’s Facebook and Twitter pages."
